Café Robey, located inside of The Robey Hotel, sits at the center of the six-corner intersection in Wicker Park. Executive Chef, Kevin McAllister, serves contemporary American cuisine highlighting colorful and flavorful dishes.
{Ambiance}
The restaurant is small and intimate, which makes it the perfect spot for a nice, relaxing dinner. A lot of natural light shine through the large windows. The space is sleek and modern with red booths lining a window-paned wall that looks into the kitchen.
Towards the back of the restaurant, you will find the bar, and then the kitchen directly behind it. The whole space is bright and has a nice open feel to it with some decorative plants throughout.
{Food}
They recently introduced a new menu, where you will find familiar flavors with updated and creative twists. While the menu is not extensive, there are plenty of options for everyone’s taste. The dishes are on the smaller side, so I recommend getting a few to share.
Salad
The Salad had fresh, crisp lettuce that was lightly dressed with Green Goddess dressing. I liked that it didn’t have a ton of dressing on it, which made it a nice light dish to start out the meal. This dish was very colorful and topped with shaved carrots, radish, cucumber, watermelon radish, and tomatoes.
Shrimp
The Shrimp dish was refreshing with a unique and delightful mix of flavors. The charred grilled flavor really stood out, especially when paired with the corn and cucumber salad and fresh watermelon. The sweetness of the watermelon paired well with the roasted corn and cucumber.
Duck
The Duck was well-seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was served with tangy cabbage slaw and pomme purée. I was told the dish takes three hours to prepare, which you could taste in the exquisite flavor.
Salmon
The Salmon was pan-seared and served over a bed of spinach and crispy leek rounds. The leek rounds were lightly breaded, which paired perfectly with this dish. The crispy salmon skin added a nice crunch and texture to an otherwise classic dish.
Beef
The Beef was tender and served in a juicy, flavorful sauce. It was served with savory potato gnocchi and celery root purée. The red wine ragout tied together the flavor of the beef and gnocchi. This was definitely my favorite dish because of the delicious red wine ragout, which really enhanced the flavor of the dish.
Smash Berry
The Smash Berry cocktail was delightfully sweet and tasty with pieces of berries in it. If you’re in the mood for a fruity and refreshing cocktail, look no further.
FAB TIP: Vegetarian and vegan options available.
{Experience}
If you are looking for a date-night spot or a casual place to catch up with friends over dinner, I recommend Café Robey. It has a laid-back, but trendy vibe. The space is small, intimate, and quiet. All of the dishes we tried were perfectly executed and extremely flavorful, so I will definitely be checking out Café Robey again!
